Ika Janiszewski, First Year Advisor

In the last edition of the Declassified Survival Guide, I wanted to wrap things up by mentioning some hidden gems and perks of the York University campus and community. It is so easy to get so busy that we forget to take a moment to unwind, relax, and explore the amazing campus we get to call home during our studies.

So, although your classes and club activities may largely be in the Schulich building,  understanding and appreciating the little services and spaces available for you as a student across the York University campus is always a great idea.

Spaces

Whether you are looking for a cool place to hang out, a new study space, or just want to relax with your friends check out these three spots on campus:

1. The Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence

A brand new building located on the south-east corner of campus, the Bergeron Centre is filled with unique study spaces, futuristic classrooms, and cozy nooks. It’s a great way to take a break from the Schulich building and hit the books in a new space.

2. Courtyard above Central Square

Newly refurbished and accessible from Ross, Scott or Campus Walk, this hybrid green space atop Central Square is a great place to enjoy the sun during lunch breaks, or stroll around between classes. With some shaded and open places to sit, as well as sections of grass and greenery, look no further for your new outdoor hangout spot until the snow comes!

3. Third Floor of the Student Centre

Looking for a comfy couch spot to get some work done or take a nap, then the Student Centre is a great place to check out! Located right next to the printing centre, and right above the food court, this spot has everything you need to both work and relax, hard.

Services

As a York student, you have access to various resources and services right on campus, usually for free or at discounted prices. While some of you may not think of using these services right away, they’re worthwhile to keep in mind in case you find a need later on in your undergraduate studies.

1. Printing and Binding

Located in York Lanes, Campus Photo and Printing is a great place to get your larger projects printed in colour, bound, and ready to hand in. Located right in the heart of campus, it will save you a trip to another printing service, and will typically lighten the cost on your wallet as well.

2. Photo Printing

If you are looking to get photos printed, from standard size to giant posters, the VISA Digital Lab in the Centre for Fine Arts (Room 132) is a great place to go. Here you not only have access to discounted photo printing services, but access to a technician who can help with printing, as well as Photoshop / Lightroom access to adjust your photos for printing.

3. Camera Loans

Located across from the Digital Lab is the Photography Cage; a hub for photography and videography materials. If you need to borrow a camera or some camera related equipment for a class, drop by and see what gear is available! You have free access to various tools and resources in 24 hour increments, and can use these props, cameras and backdrops to take your presentations and projects to the next level.

4. Phone Charging Stations

Located around campus in Vari Hall, Scott Library, and most notably in the Bronfman Business Library, cell phone charging stations or charger borrowing services are available. So, if your phone is running out of battery midway through your day, you can rest assured there are places for you to charge it up.

Here’s to having an amazing start to your undergraduate journey at Schulich! If you ever need help with anything, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. It has been a pleasure and an honour to be your First Year Advisor, and I look forward to seeing you at O-Week, and around the building later this year!

Cheers,

Ika
