Ambassador of the Month – MARCH

Every month the Undergraduate Programs Unit will highlight an Ambassador(s) that has contributed to the Schulich and York Community by demonstrating leadership, professionalism and/or outstanding achievement. Congratulations to the 2013 Jeux de Commerce (JDC) Team our Ambassadors of the Month for March.

Teamwork is one of the important skills that we foster as part of the Ambassador Program and this year’s JDC Team showed us that while we can be successful individually, we can accomplish so much more if we work together.

A team of 48 Schulich BBA and iBBA students travelled to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia from January 18 – 20 to compete at the 2013 Jeux de Commerce (JDC) Business Competition. The JDC is one of Canada’s largest business competitions, which includes academic, athletic and social competitions. Participants take part in academic case analyses, parliamentary-style debates, sports tournaments and social competitions to test school spirit, teamwork and determination. Over 500 delegates from 13 schools participated in the 2013 JDC event. Overall Schulich placed:

1^st overall in the Debate Category
2^nd in Accounting
3^rd in Management Information Systems
3^rd in Dodge ball

Giving back to the community is another key principle that Schulich encourages in our students and the JDC team showed exemplary leadership in this regard as they raised $3,000 for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Toronto and the Canadian Cancer Society. They also completed over 200 hours of volunteer work for Epilepsy Toronto and the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Maria Valela and Patrick dos Santos, co-captains of the Schulich JDC team stated that the success of the team was due to countless hours of practice, passion, skill and commitment from all delegates.

Events like JDC, allow students to develop the leadership, communication and soft skills necessary to effectively work in a team environment allowing them to be successful not only academically but also in the global marketplace.
