Dear Schulich International & Exchange Students,

For newcomers to Schulich, I would like to welcome you to both the Schulich School of Business, and to Toronto, Canada. I hope you will truly enjoy your experience here, both academically and culturally.

Furthermore, I would like to invite all of you, both newcomers and continuing International students, to join myself and the other Academic Peer Supporters in the International Relations Office for one-on-one language practice. In addition to the existing support that we provide for written assignments, cases, and papers, we will now be offering sessions focused on improving your verbal English skills. Starting immediately, students with English as a second language can book appointments to practice their verbal English skills by following the “Academic Peer Support Appointment” link under the “Useful Links” section of the Schulich student portal, in exactly the same manner as one would book an Academic Peer Support Appointment for written work.

There are numerous reasons to book an appointment to practice your verbal English skills, including:

  • Understanding the less formal nature of verbal English versus written English
  • Improving your pronunciation and usage of English words, and correcting your usage of verb tenses in
    real-time conversations
  • Enhancing your presentation skills
  • Bettering your understanding of English idioms, business and technical terminology, and frequently used metaphors found exclusively in verbal English

I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible this Winter Term, on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Lan Yu at lyu@schulich.yorku.ca.

Sincerely,

Matthew Haw

Academic Peer Supporter
