As the new term gets underway, we wanted to highlight the process that students with disabilities must follow to ensure that accommodations are put in place in the classroom to promote your full academic ability.

Step 1) If you have a documented disability, you must register with Counselling and Disabilities Services (CDS) right away. Once you have registered, you will be given a Letter of Accommodation.

Step 2) Provide a copy of the Letter of Accommodation to your instructors at the start of term. If you have not already done so, please take the time to do so now.

(Optional) Provide a copy of your Letter of Accommodation to Olga Carew in Student Services & International Relations. Olga will ensure that the letter is kept in your file and can provide assistance if you require support in securing accommodations or help in planning your courses. Olga can also help you work with instructors should you need support seeking accommodations.

Step 3) If required, schedule your tests/exams through the Alternative Exam Centre. The Centre requires at least three (3) weeks’ notice in advance of the scheduled test dates. The Centre will contact your instructor(s) to coordinate a time for the test/exam as well as secure a copy of test/exam materials and instructions.

Please note that, at times, some of the recommended accommodations listed in your Letter of Accommodation may not be feasible as they do not maintain the academic integrity of the program or course curriculum. In such instances, you are encouraged to work with your instructor, Olga Carew and the CDS to identify an appropriate alternative.

It is also important to note that accommodations cannot be provided retroactively.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Olga Carew at ocarew@schulich.yorku.ca.
