by Sayem Khan, Schulich Ambassador, BBA Candidate 2019

When I first saw a picture of the Schulich Ambassadors at the Ontario Universities’ Fair on social media, I immediately made the decision to be a part of this amazing team. The next day I went to Rohini Chaba – Schulich’s Student Engagement Coordinator – to ask her how to participate in OUF and how to join the Ambassador program.  From then until now I have been an active member of the Schulich Ambassador Program, and my participation will forever remain one of my favourite experiences at Schulich.

As an Ambassador, this year I was fortunate to attend the Ontario Universities’ Fair on September 25th. I had the pleasure of talking to and answering questions from dozens of prospective students.  I always feel respected when people ask me for my suggestions and tips. I try to make sure I provide my audience with the most accurate information possible, and utilize my sense of empathy to serve students according to their needs. One interesting experience I enjoyed was meeting Schulich alumni, York alumni, and even faculty members who want their sons and daughters to pursue post-secondary education at Schulich. They wanted to know more about the positive changes that have been happening at Schulich since they graduated.

I really appreciate how high school students are thinking ahead about the school they would like to attend; academic and extra-curricular opportunities the school provides; and what to expect as they transition from high school to university. I also enjoyed reminding students about applying for scholarships by sharing my story. One important reason I chose to attend York was the attractive scholarship I received. Most importantly, I was able to create a positive impact on students who are recent immigrants to Canada and are making an important decision. I can relate to the situation they are going through, as I was in their shoes not too long ago as a new immigrant making the transition to post-secondary.

Today, I reflect back on positive feedback I received from students and parents at the Ontario Universities’ Fair. I look forward to my next assignment within the Schulich Ambassador Program, when I can again serve students in a constructive way.
