As a Schulich Student, you are only exposed to Timothy’s coffee and Tuchner’s sandwiches. But try to step outside this building and explore the York Campus. The York Campus is a maze with many great surprises. If you are contemplating staying on campus after your lectures, you may want to stop in to test your vocals at Karaoke Thursdays at Sakura’s, located inside York Lanes or become a member of the Salsa Club. You can also enjoy the weekly pub nights at the Underground, every Thursday.

York University is also equipped with an impressive Fine Arts Department, located in the Accolade East building. The Fine Arts Department Events page http://www.yorku.ca/finearts/events/) exposes you to all the upcoming events they are hosting; Concerts, Dance and Theatre Performances, Exhibitions, Film Screenings, Talks and Conferences, and Workshops. A few concerts and theatre productions require an admission fee between $5 and $20. However, you will notice that most of these events offer free admission, which gives you more of a reason to watch a student film screening over going to the movies. If you are interested in visiting the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) then you can visit their page for galley hours or book a gallery tour here: http://theagyuisoutthere.org/everywhere/?page_id=1097. Admission to the gallery is always free. Considering that the Accolade and Schulich buildings are neighbors, take advantage of all these free opportunities to enhance your student experience.

Additionally, the TEL building, located behind the Accolade Building is also a great place to visit if you are interested in experiencing interactive artwork, specifically located on the 4th floor. The Student Centre and Vari Hall are locations where you will find the most action. On random days, there is free food being given away by a particular Student Club, and campus events are mainly advertised here. Many flyers will be handed to you in these two locations, but resist the temptation to throw them away. If you are looking for opportunities to learn and experience new things, you will usually be exposed to them at these two locations on campus. You can read about student recommendations about how to maximize education and entertainment experience on campus on the YorkU Blog, http://experienceyork.apps01.yorku.ca/main/. If you are interested in joining a York student club or organization, then get started here: http://www.yorku.ca/colleges/clubs/.

Finally, I suggest going on the YorkU website and clicking on “Campus Events”, http://www.yorku.ca/yuevents/index.asp. This page conveniently lists events by month. For example, you may see an upcoming dance performance, an art exhibition, workshops, sporting events, career fairs, discounted comic book sale, etc. In short, there is always something worthwhile going on somewhere around campus, so make the best of your experience while you’re here. The worst thing you can do is to only stay inside the Schulich building.
