Earn credit while you gain invaluable work experience in the innovation ecosystem this Fall!

The Schulich Startups Program team-up with Professor Farrokh Zandi unlocks exciting work placements that match hand-picked Schulich BBA students with a collection of top Schulich Startups & Innovation Ecosystem companies!

This special stream of the MGMT 4850 Course (managed jointly by Chris Carder, Executive Director, Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Professor Zandi) offers students the opportunity to gain relevant work experience while developing critical thinking and reflecting on the startup’s theories and initiatives.

Who Is This Course For?

Student Eligibility Requirement:

The Placement is only available after completion of the first-year courses subject to the approval obtained from the (Associate) Program Director prior to the start of the Placement.

Please Note:

If you had already taken this course in Summer, you will not be eligible to participate again for Fall.

This is a great opportunity for you if:

  • You are looking to gain experience of working in a strategic role at a firm
  • You want to reflect on your classroom learning by helping a business to grow
  • Want to stay ahead of the curve before entering the workforce upon your graduation

What is the Time Commitment & Credit Weight?

This course is available for this Fall term. You will be required to complete at least 240 hours over the term, and will earn you 3.00 academic credits upon completion.

Your time could be spent working remotely or on-site depending on the firm. You will need to ensure you have enough time and space in your schedule to fulfill the obligations of this opportunity.

Please refer to the attached Course Outline for detailed information.

Please note:

  • If you are taking four other courses in Fall, along with MGMT 4850, then you can work a maximum 10-15 hours per week. This translates into a minimum of 16 weeks of placement – which may mean finishing the placement in late December, even though the academic term is 12 weeks long.
  • If you are only taking three other courses in Fall, along with MGMT 4850, you can easily take your placement up to 20-25 hours per week and finish no longer than the academic term of 12 weeks.

Next Steps: How Do I Apply?

  1. Read the full Outline carefully.
  2. Apply to the Schulich Startups stream here: MGMT 4850: Work Placement Application (Fall 2021). The application will ask you to indicate which of the two terms you would like to sign up for.
  3. You will then be invited for an interview with the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship where we would love to learn more about your interests, motivations, and skills.
  4. After you’ve had a chance to meet the company/founder, we will support you with all the internal approvals and remaining paperwork.

Last date for submission of applications is August 30, 2021.
